- Interviewing for a job, online, in person or at a job fair
- Going to any IowaWORKS workshop
- Going to a job fair run by IowaWORKS or partners (keep the flyer)

Keep a work search log
IWD’s form is the Job Contact and Reemployment Activity Log (in IowaWORKS). It asks for: employer name, employer address, contact method, contact person name and title, contact email or phone, job title, occupation, level of interest, application date.
The free myjobcontacts app keeps the same details and prints them in the same columns as IWD’s form. Prefer paper? Use the free printable work search log.
Who doesn’t have to search
- IWD waives your work search because you are on a temporary layoff and expect to be recalled within about 4 weeks (check your notice)
- You are in Department Approved Training (DAT)
- You are on a short-term layoff from highway construction, repair or maintenance work
- You are a union member whose union has its own placement office (you must keep paid-up membership and check with the union weekly)
Union members: Union members whose union has its own placement office are in a separate group: keep paid-up membership and check with the union every week for work. Union members are left out of the RCM program.
See work search exemptions for how these work in other states.
Reviews, audits and RESEA
IWD career planners verify claims each week and review your job searches. If you are picked for RESEA, a RESEA advisor reviews your work searches with you. Not answering a career planner can get your claim locked until you respond.
RESEA: IWD picks some people for RESEA within the first 5 paid weeks of a claim. If you are picked, you must go. You get a letter saying where to report and what to bring. A RESEA advisor reviews your work searches and resume and signs you up for workshops. Most people are also placed in IWD's Reemployment Case Management (RCM) program and meet with a career planner.
What to expect: unemployment work search audits.
If you miss your number
If you don't do and certify 4 valid activities, or your search is not a real effort, you can be denied benefits for that week. Not taking part in RESEA can also lead to a denial.
Sign up with the job bank
You must register for work on iowaworks.gov and keep an active, searchable resume there for your whole claim. IowaWORKS.
