How many job searches do you need for unemployment in Idaho?
Short answer: Most people must do at least 5 work search actions each week they claim benefits. You enter all 5 on your weekly certification in the Claimant Portal. You must do this even if you work part time.
Each week
5 work search activities
Some people have a different number. See below.

Different numbers for some people
- Employer attached (set return date): 0 a week. If Idaho Labor puts you in Employer (Job) Attached status, for example a seasonal layoff with a definite return date within 16 weeks, you don't do the 5 actions. You must stay in touch with your employer and still file weekly. Never assume you are attached; check your status on the Claimant Portal home page.
- Union attached: 0 a week. If you are an active member of a union that regularly refers you to full-time work and Idaho Labor puts you in Union Attached status, you stay in touch with your union instead.
What counts as a work search in Idaho
- Sending an application, resume, cover letter or letter of interest to an employer that is taking applications
- Doing a job interview (the application and the interview can count as 2 actions)
- Meeting a workforce consultant at an Idaho Labor office, or doing job search counseling or a job search plan
- Going to a job fair, virtual job fair, hiring event, or a full job search workshop
- A mock interview or interview prep class
- An employer test, background check, drug test, or civil service exam
- Marketing yourself: finishing a resume, cover letter, LinkedIn profile, elevator pitch, or uploading your resume to a job board
- Registering with a staffing service, recruiter or placement agency
- A skills, personality or interests assessment
- Going to a required RESEA interview
What doesn’t count
- Just asking a business if it is hiring
- Looking at job listings without applying
- Contacting your most recent employer or your part-time employer
- Following up on a job you already applied for, or contacting the same employer again and again
- Following up with a staffing agency (applying with one counts)
- Getting a job referral without acting on it
- Self-employment, contract or gig work such as Uber or Lyft
- Applying for work you don't have the skills or education for
- Not applying the way the employer asked
- Sending resumes to friends or relatives who can't hire you
Same employer twice? Contacting the same employer again, or checking on a job you already applied for, does not count as a new action.

How to report your job contacts
Each week you file your weekly certification in the Claimant Portal and add your 5 work search actions. For each one, give the employer and job, the date, how you applied, the employer's address, website and phone, and the name of the person you contacted. Idaho Labor checks these with employers. Save emails, screenshots with dates, interview invitations and workshop records as proof.
When: File your weekly certification in the Claimant Portal after each week ends.
Where: Claimant Portal.
When the search starts: From your first weekly certification. Each weekly certification asks for your 5 actions.
Keep a work search log
Save proof of your actions (emails with employers, screenshots with dates, interview invitations, workshop records). Idaho Labor does not say for how long. IDOL’s form is the Work search log (I-77-21). It asks for: week of (sunday to saturday), action date, company, method (mail, website, email, in person, phone, fax), action (checklist: submitted resume, completed application, interview, job fair, workshop, mock interview, civil service exam, skills test, linkedin profile, etc.), street, city, state, zip, email address or website, contact person, telephone number (or reason not available), type of work or job title, job and/or confirmation number, what is the next step?.
The free myjobcontacts app keeps the same details and prints them in the same columns as IDOL’s form. Prefer paper? Use the free printable work search log.
Who doesn’t have to search
- Idaho Labor has placed you in Employer (Job) Attached status, such as a seasonal layoff with a definite return-to-work date within 16 weeks
- You are an active member of a union that regularly refers you to full-time work and you are in Union Attached status
Union members: If you are an active member of a union that regularly refers you to full-time work, your work search may be waived (Union Attached). You will be asked about your union when you file. You still file weekly.
See work search exemptions for how these work in other states.
Reviews, audits and RESEA
Idaho Labor checks your reported actions with employers. If it can't verify an action from the details you gave, it can deny benefits and make you pay them back.
RESEA: You may be chosen for a reemployment assessment (RESEA) interview with a workforce consultant. You are told by mail. If you don't go, your benefits stop. The RESEA interview counts as a work search action.
What to expect: unemployment work search audits.
If you miss your number
If you don't report 5 valid actions, you can be denied benefits for that week. Actions that can't be verified can lead to denial and an overpayment. Lying about your work search is fraud and brings penalties.
