What counts as a work search in District of Columbia
- Applying for a job in person, by mail, phone, online or email
- Going to a job fair
- Contacting employers about openings
- Using an employment agency or placement service
- Taking part in a workforce program or activity offered by DOES
What doesn’t count
- Applying again for the same job, unless the employer's hiring situation has changed
Same employer twice? Older DOES guidance says your 2 contacts each week should be with new employers, and you should not apply again for the same job unless the employer's hiring situation has changed.
More on this in what counts as a work search contact.
How to report your job contacts
Each week you file a weekly certification on DCNetworks and answer whether you looked for work. Older DOES instructions say you also give details of your 2 job searches there. Keep your own log for every week with the date, employer name, job title, employer contact information and how you applied. Do not mail your log to DOES unless they ask.
When: File a weekly certification for each week, starting the Sunday after the week ends.
Where: DC Unemployment Insurance Benefits System (DCNetworks).
When the search starts: The week you file your claim.
Keep a work search log
Keep your work search record through your whole claim and after it ends. DOES can ask to review it at any time during or after the benefit year. No set number of years is given. DOES’s form is the Work Search Log (in the 2019 work search FAQ). It asks for: date of contact, employer name and address (and url), contact name and title (and phone), method of contact, position (and job #), result or follow-up action (confirmation email received y/n).
The free myjobcontacts app keeps the same details and prints them in the same columns as DOES’s form. Prefer paper? Use the free printable work search log.
Who doesn’t have to search
- You are a union member in good standing and your union actively looks for work for you (DOES checks this)
- You are a furloughed federal government employee (from January 31, 2026)
Union members: If you are a union member in good standing and your union actively seeks work for you, you may be exempt from the weekly search. You must stay in good standing and be available for work the union refers. DOES verifies union exemptions.
See work search exemptions for how these work in other states.
Reviews, audits and RESEA
DOES may ask for proof of your work search at any time. You may be told to report to an American Job Center or a Reemployment Eligibility Assessment event and bring your log. If an employer you listed disputes it or it cannot be checked, you can be found ineligible for those weeks.
RESEA: You may be called to a Reemployment Eligibility Assessment (REA) event at an American Job Center. Bring your work search log; staff may review it.
What to expect: unemployment work search audits.
If you miss your number
If you do not make or report 2 contacts, you are denied benefits for that week only. You can be paid again once you go back to doing at least 2 valid contacts a week. If you cannot give proof when asked, you can be denied for the weeks in question, and older guidance says benefits can be held until your records are in order.
Sign up with the job bank
You must register for employment services with the American Job Center through DCNetworks. If you live in another state that does not border DC, register with the job service in your state. DCNetworks.
